PhD Scholarship Geoengineering: A Systems Engineering Analysis

Geoengineering is a new and exciting venture at the intersection of Engineering Science, climate science and public policy. It aims to devise and develop processes through which the climate can be actively tuned to partly offset the potentially regressive impacts of human-driven climate change. However, prior work mostly considers Geoengineering as an open-loop process. This project will use a low order climate model to determine formal observability, controllability and closed-loop stability properties and to devise new concepts for Geoengineering to reduce the scale of intervention required. For further information please visit www.strath.ac.uk/space and/or contact Professor Colin McInnes [colin.mcinnes@strath.ac.uk]. Candidates should have, or expect to receive a 1st or 2.1 class honours (or equivalent) degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a related discipline. The PhD scholarship is for 3 years from 1st October 2013. The scholarships will cover fees and a stipend of £14,200, reviewed annually. Please note that due to funding restrictions only UK/EU candidates are eligible. To apply please email a covering and a full Curriculum Vitae with contact details for two referees to Professor Colin McInnes.   The closing date for applications is Friday 17 May 2013.
